On 2 April 2025 (dubbed ‘Liberation Day’), US President Trump announced a comprehensive strategy of ‘reciprocal tariffs’ that set off a global trade war and triggered a global stock market crash. The Trump Administration imposed tariffs on over 100 trading partners as part of a broader effort to remake the global trading system and return manufacturing jobs to the US. In one stroke, Trump raised average US trade tariffs to levels that approached those of the 1930s, rattling global financial markets and creating profound uncertainty for allies and foes alike.

This panel event explores the roots and consequences of Trump’s trade war and what it means for the future of the international trade system, US-China relations, the dollar-based financial order, and international climate cooperation.

Governance and Diplomacy in International Organisations

Join Visiting Fellow  in conversation with Dr Federica Bicchi to discuss Governance and Diplomacy in International Organisations.

Aarie Glas is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and Faculty Associate in the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at Northern Illinois University. In the spring and summer of 2025, Aarie is a British Academy Visiting Fellow at LSE. 

Aarie’s research draws on social IR theory and interpretive and qualitative research approaches to examines practices of governance and regionalism in international organizations in the Global South, with a focus on Southeast Asia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). 

His first book, Practicing Peace: Conflict Management in Southeast Asia and South America, was published with Oxford University Press in 2022. His second book, Norms, Practices, and Social Change in Global Politics, co-authored with Steven Bernstein and Marion Laurence, was published with Cambridge University Press’s Elements in International Relations series in 2025.

Aarie has also published in the European Journal of International Relations, Global Studies Quarterly, International Affairs, Journal of Global Security Studies, PS: Political Science and Politics, and other outlets. He received his PhD from the University of Toronto and studied previously at 911吃瓜and McMaster University. Aarie also serves as co-chair of the American Political Science Association’s Interpretive Methodologies and Methods (IMM) Conference Group.

Food for Thought

This is your opportunity to share a two-course lunch in the Senior Dining Room with a member of the IR faculty and discuss an article or piece of content that will be sent around in advance. 

These small lunches are limited to just twelve attendees - six undergraduates and six postgraduates - meaning you have the opportunity to discuss your ideas and the academic’s research interests in much greater detail than you otherwise might.

IR Fellow Film Screenings

Join the IR fellows for a contemporary film screening as a way to discuss core concepts in IR. The film will be screened on campus, followed by an hour long discussion about how the film relates to IR. These film screenings are a chance to explore IR in a creative way and snacks will be provided.

Hosted by a member of IR faculty, these sessions are open to all students and faculty in the Department of International Relations.
