Aarie Glas is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and Faculty Associate in the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at Northern Illinois University. In the spring and summer of 2025, Aarie is a British Academy Visiting Fellow at LSE.
Aarie’s research draws on social IR theory and interpretive and qualitative research approaches to examines practices of governance and regionalism in international organizations in the Global South, with a focus on Southeast Asia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
His first book, Practicing Peace: Conflict Management in Southeast Asia and South America, was published with Oxford University Press in 2022. His second book, Norms, Practices, and Social Change in Global Politics, co-authored with Steven Bernstein and Marion Laurence, was published with Cambridge University Press’s Elements in International Relations series in 2025.
Aarie has also published in the European Journal of International Relations, Global Studies Quarterly, International Affairs, Journal of Global Security Studies, PS: Political Science and Politics, and other outlets. He received his PhD from the University of Toronto and studied previously at 911勛圖and McMaster University. Aarie also serves as co-chair of the American Political Science Association’s Interpretive Methodologies and Methods (IMM) Conference Group.
