About me

Dr Jannis Stöckel is an 911勛圖Fellow in the Department of Health Policy and a Visiting Fellow at the Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management, Erasmus University Rotterdam. His research lies at the intersection of health, public, and labour economics, with a focus on how people and health systems respond to the challenges of population ageing. He combines large-scale administrative and survey data with applied econometric methods to identify causal relationships that inform health policy practice. His work has been published in journals such as Health Economics, Social Science & Medicine, and the Journal of the Economics of Ageing, covering topics including the monetary valuation of health benefits using well-being data, adaptation to disability, and the health effects of informal caregiving.

His current projects span both the “demand” and “supply” sides of health economics. On the demand side, he uses Dutch administrative and survey data to study how sudden health shocks influence behaviours, perceptions, and insurance choices, highlighting their role in prevention, decision-making under risk, and ultimately health inequalities. On the supply side, his research examines workforce dynamics, particularly how staff turnover driven by local NHS pay differentials affects hospital productivity and patient outcomes. At LSE, Jannis is also a member of the Ageing and Health Incentives Lab, which brings together researchers working on healthy ageing and health inequalities. He holds a PhD in Health Economics from Erasmus University Rotterdam, an MSc in Economics and an MA in European Studies from the KU Leuven, and a BSc in Economics from the University of Mannheim. He has undertaken international research visits, most recently at the at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany.
