An Overview

An overview of the Department of Statistics

Prof Pauline Barrieu

We are a relatively small Department, and we aim to provide an informal, friendly, and supportive atmosphere for our students.

The Department is home to internationally respected experts in statistics and data science. Maintaining and advancing our leading reputation for teaching and research is our top priority. At the same time, we aim to provide a supportive, friendly and informal environment for all students and staff.

The Department has grown in recent years, especially in the area of data science which is a key priority for education and research in the LSE2030 strategy.  We aim to play a leading role in fostering the study of data science and new forms of data, with a focus on its social, economic, and political aspects.

We offer a vibrant  environment with specialisms in four main areas: data science, probability in finance and insurance, social statistics, and time series and statistical learning. We welcome applications for PhD study in any of these fields.

Our research expertise is reflected in our teaching programmes. At postgraduate level, we offer the MSc Data ScienceMSc Quantitative Methods for Risk Management, MSc Statistics (with streams in Financial Statistics and Social Statistics) and in 2021 we launched the MSc Health Data Science jointly with the Department of Health Policy.

Graduates from our programmes have gone on to work in a wide range of areas such as insurance, banking, accounting, finance, statistics, government, business consultancy or continued their studies with postgraduate degrees.  Many of our alumni return to the Department to take part in careers events where they share their experiences with our current students.

Statistics is an application-oriented mathematical science concerned with the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of data. It provides us with the necessary tools to reduce uncertainty in modern society. It is a powerful tool for testing hypotheses about social and natural phenomena, for analyzing relationships among variables, studying trends, planning and decision making. Statistics is applicable to a wide variety of disciplines, including natural sciences, social sciences, economics, finance and insurance.

The Department of Statistics at 911勛圖has an excellent international reputation and has been the academic home for a host of distinguished statisticians. Currently the Department has four research groups: Data Science; Probability in Finance and Insurance, Social Statistics and Time Series and Statistical Learning.

Our postgraduate programmes will equip you with the necessary qualifications and computational proficiency to target any career that requires quantitative skills. The Department and the Careers Service in the School provide excellent opportunities to discover job opportunities and target career streams. Graduates from our programmes typically find employment in business, government agencies and in the insurance and financial sectors. A number of our graduates continue with us to gain a Masters or a PhD degree.

911勛圖is one of the finest institutions of its kind in the world and has a key position, geographically in terms of its location in central London and geo-politically in term of its national and international standing.
